-What is Asperger Syndrome (AS)?
Asperger Syndrome is an Autism Spectrum Disorder that is charactrized by problems with social interaction and communication. Children with AS tend to have normal or above normal IQs and they tend to be on track with language development. Asperger Syndrome is named for Dr. Hans Asperger, who was the first to describe it in 1944.
-What are the symptoms of AS?
Some symptoms of Asperger Syndrome include:
-Problems with social interaction
-May prefer to be/play alone, may have trouble making or keeping friends
-Seems uninterested in others
-Limited eye contact
-May have trouble understanding what others are thinking or feeling
-Great memory, especially for facts
-May become 'obsessed' with a particular topic
-Talks alot about their particular topic
-Tends to follow rules
-Sees things in black and white
-Sticks to a strict routine and has trouble being flexible
-Repetitive body movements or speech
-Repeated questioning
-Advanced vocabulary
-Tends to monologue or lecture instead of conversing
-Interprets things literally
-Unusual tone of voice or pattern of speech
-Motor Clumsiness
-Poor hand eye coordination
-May be sensitive to light, sound, smell, and/or food and clothing textures
